IDSA 차기 회장, George McCain FIDSA

Congraturations on being elected president– Elect of IDSA. When were you elected president– Elect of IDSA?

A year and half ago, 2008

What is responsibility of president– Elect of IDSA?

President– Elect is what we would call vice president. My responsibilities are mainly to back up president, to assist the president and to learn to become familiar with the job of president. So when I become president, I already know what to do.

You are now President – Elect. When will you become president of IDSA?

January 1, 2011

IDSA conducts International Design Excellence Awards(IDEA) with Businessweek. Can you briefly introduce IDSA to me?

IDSA is the largest membership based Industrial Design organization in the world. It’s not the industrial “design” society. It’s the Industrial Designers Society. It’s a non-profit organization and it’s a volunteer organization. We have the paid 10 staff to run the day-to-day business of IDSA. But all of the officers and board members and chapter officers are volunteers.

As I know, IDEA as well as the red dot design award, International forum Design is prestigious design competition. If there is any difference between IDEA and red-dot, what would that difference be?

No difference in the end result which is to pick out what is good design. There’s a difference in the organizational set up of them. I don’t know that much about red-dot, IF as far as their business base, if they’re for profit or if they’re non profit. But I know that they cost more money to enter than IDEA which is really inexpensive to enter. IDEA doesn’t cost very much at all. So to me a big difference is the cost of entry. I think we’re also the only design competition of the 3 that is publicized in an international magazine, Businessweek and beginning this year, the business magazine Fast Company.

Recently Korean companies have had the good results in IDEA. What do you think of the design of Korean companies?

I think Korean design is very good. We’re very impressed with what is coming out of Korea. I think Samsung probably wins as many IDEA awards as any other company. So it’s almost scary to USA designers how good Korean designer is these days. Korean companies spend a lot of time on the design thinking rather than just pure form. Form is great. But also it’s really good to understand the consumer : what the consumer needs, what the consumer wants, how they’re going to use it.

KIDP has been conducting several design policies including support for small and medium size companies, design education and international cooperation with design organization etc. What do you think the effectiveness of design policy by KIDP is?

By looking at the results, I think it is very good for Korea. I think it’s great KIDP is supporting design so that companies understand the importance and value of design. KIDP does outstanding job of promoting design. You know in the US we do not have a government design organization. We may never have one. We may be the only developed country that doesn’t have a government design organization to promote design. Therefore one of IDSA’s role in the US is to promote design to business.

The function of IDSA may be different from KIDP. But, IDSA has had an important role strengthening the design competitiveness in USA. What is the major design policy to heighten the competitiveness of companies and students?

We have several initiatives. I think IDEA is a major thing because through Businessweek, and now Fast Company, we are able to really get a lot of publicity about good design and its impact on business and Fast Company will only increase that visibility to all businesses in the US. We also have a program called ‘CATALYST’ where we publish case studies of good design and its impact on business. We hope ‘CATALYST’ business cases will become just as important as IDEA.
We have 5 district conferences a year. We have 12 ~15 design schools in each district. The Merit Award winners from each school present their work and the Jury there picks the best student from each district. The Merit Award winner from each school receives free membership in IDSA for 1 year. We also have a ‘Mentor’ program for students.

As I know, IDSA will host 2010 International Conference from August 4th to 7th in the city of Portland, Oregon. Can you explain this conference briefly?

The International Design Conferences are the best opportunity for Industrial Designers from around the US as well as internationally to come together "face to face" to meet each other, network, and discuss the major design issues of our time. It is also, of course, the "official meeting" of the IDSA each year for conducting official business. The theme this year is the emerging DIY culture (Do It Yourself) also known as the "maker" movement. We will discuss whether this is a threat or an opportunity for Industrial Designers. The conference Chair is Sohrab Vossoughi, the founder of Ziba which is a great design firm based in Portland.

Changing the topic of conversation, I want to listen to your personal opinion about design. There are many design definitions. How would define design?

It’s a very interesting question. 20-30 years ago, design was mostly about form giving, the look and feel, the shape of the object, making a beautiful shape of something that appeals to people, although there has always been an innovation component in design. But, in the end it’s all about making it look appealing, as well as functioning well, having an understandable user interface ( if it has controls on it), and, of course, the product must be manufacturable and profitable – or at least meet the business goals set for it.

What are your reasons for choosing design as your career?

Actually my studies began in architecture and I discovered industrial design here at the University of Washington. I was just walking through the Art School building one day, by accident, when I saw drawings on the wall of cars, radios, and so on, I thought “what it this?”, this looks like what I want to do. My story may be the same as a lot of industrial designers.

Who is your favorite designer? Why?

I think if I had to answer that now, I would say Philippe Starck, although I’ve had others over the years. He is my favorite practicing designer and living designer. Why do I like Philippe Starck? Because he has a very good sense humor and it shows in his designs. He is playful with his designs. He is always provocative. He never does the safe thing. He is always pushing. He makes you think about it.

Can you give good advice to young designers who wish to become world design leaders?

That’s a tough question, because it’s like a pyramid. There are a lot of designers at the bottom and only few get the top to become a world leader. What I would tell any young designer is to enjoy what you do because you may not become Jonathan Ive but you could become a good designer at the company you work for and do really good design. If you want to be famous, you may have to go out on your own. Start your own company - like Yves Behar, for example, or Karim Rashid. It would be hard. I think Jonathan Ive has always just enjoyed what he does. He has a really strong design sensibility. He has his own design aesthetic. He doesn’t compromise. That’s the mark of any great design leader - never compromise your principles.

What is your opinion about the work of graduating design students at the University of Washington? What is the most impressive thing about their work?

I may have a bias because I am a graduate of University of Washington and I teach here. But, I think they are really good. The University of Washington has graduated some very good designers. Everybody in the world knows the company, JanSport. A student a year ahead of me at University of Washington founded JanSport. His senior thesis was a backpack and he founded the company when he graduated. In addition I think University of Washington design program could be credited with interior look and design all of the passenger airplanes in the world. Seattle-based Teague has designed the interiors of all Boeing passenger airplanes since 1948 and a large number of University of Washington graduates have worked for Teague over the years. I believe a major factor in the success of our graduates is that the University of Washington is a great University. It’s Liberal Arts University, not just a design school. Students have also had to be quite well rounded because they have to take sociology, English, history, math, science, and so on, as well as design. So they are good thinkers. I think problem solving is a strong point of the design program at the University of Washington.
