폴 카잔더의 국내 첫 개인전, 《스톡스 룸》이 2013년 5월 21일부터 6월 16일까지 프로젝트 부름에서 열린다. 《스톡스 룸》은 동시대의 문제적 소비충동을 비추는 다양한 레퍼런스들을 이용한 드로잉, 영상, 사진, 오브제로 이루어진 설치 작업으로 구성된다. 작가는 글로벌 이코노미, 에너지 위기, 이념의 충돌과 신자유주의 코포라티즘(corporatism) 등에 관한 리서치를 바탕으로 대중매체 속에 존재하는 모순적 과잉 반응을 조명하는 제시적 내러티브를 이어간다. “기성화면(스톡 푸티지)”과 “간접 광고(ppl)”의 미학을 차용한 비디오 작업은 기성화면 영상, 애니매이션, 사진 그리고 상업적 사운드 효과에서 비롯된 정교한 사운드트랙에 이르기까지 다양한 매체를 재조합하는 방식으로 만들어 졌다. 그의 설치는 갤러리 공간을 반으로 나누는 건축적 개입을 통해 사회학상의 “앞쪽 무대”와 “뒤쪽 무대” 공간에 대해 암시하고, 소매환경 속 시장 지향의 “쇼룸/전시실”과 “스톡룸/창고” 의 대비를 보여준다. 이렇듯, 혼합 매체와 조형, 그리고 텍스트 작업들로 이루어진 《스톡스 룸》은 교환, 평가, 수집 그리고 욕망의 연결망 속에서 예술이 어떻게 연루되어 있는지에 관한 작가의 시적 분석과 통찰이다.

폴 카잔더는 1980년 캐나다 벤쿠버 태생으로, 현재 한국 서울을 중심으로 활동하고 있다. 캐나다, 미국, 일본 등에서 활동한 바 있으며, 2013년 하반기 국립현대미술관 창동창작스튜디오 레지던시에 입주 작가로 선정되었다. 또한 2013년 7월 강원도 철원 dmz 접경지역에서 열리는《2013 리얼 디엠지 프로젝트: 보더라인》에 참여할 예정이다.


Project broom is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of paul kajander in korea. stock’s room is an installation that brings together an expansive array of references that reflect the troubling consumer impulses of our time. drawing from research on the global economy, energy crises, ideological conflicts and neo-liberal corporatism, this exhibition continues the artist’s interest in the contradictory hysteria that occupies popular media. featuring new work that refers to the aesthetics of stock footage and product placements, kajander’s single channel video recombines found footage, animation, photography and an elaborate soundtrack comprised of commercial sound effects. the installation for project broom also includes an architectural intervention that bisects the gallery space in an allusion to the sociological notion of “front-stage” and “back-stage” spaces and the market-oriented “show room” and “stock room” of retail environments. populated by mixed-media assemblages, sculptures and text works, stock’s room is a poetic examination of the implicatedness of art within networks of exchange, evaluation, collection and desire.

Paul kajander (1980) was born in vancouver, canada. he has exhibited extensively in canada, the us and japan. he was recently ed for the national art studio of changdong residency program and is developing a project for the real dmz: borderline in cheorweon-gun this summer.
