사용하여 세계적인 영국의 여성 건축가 자하 하디드( Zaha Hadid)가
디자인 한 주방 가구 디자인의 하나로, 공간의 변형과 유동이 가능하며
오감 만족의 특성을 제공하고 있다.

Z-Island는 세계적인 화학, 자재 관련 회사인 ㈜듀폰의 신소재 코리안을 사용하여 세계적인 영국의 여성 건축가 자하 하디드( Zaha Hadid)가 디자인 한 21세기 미래의 주방 디자인이다. 2006년 밀라노 가구 페어에 소개된 이 디자인은 최근의 복합적 기능을 최적화 해 선보이는 디자인 흐름과 같이 단순히 주방 가구 디자인에 그치는 것이 아니라, 전체 공간을 디자인하며 그 안에 새로운 가전제품의 기능들을 담아 내고 있다는 것이 무엇보다 특이할만하다.
소재가 주는 특이성에 기반하여 ‘성형’이 가능하다는 특징은 기하학적 패턴을 보이며 ‘유동성’을 최대한 확보함과 동시에 기존의 ZH 스튜디오가 진행해 온 ‘아이스 시리즈’와 같이 그 조형성의 모티프를 자연환경의 관찰에서 가져왔다는 점이 주목할 만하다. 물결처럼 굽이치는 듯한 패턴은 역시 ‘열성형 주방 신소재’의 개발에 의해서 가능한 것이다. 자칫 지나치게 차갑거나 건조하게 느껴지는 물성이 낯설거나 부담스러운 부분도 없지 않다. 그러나 새로운 소재의 주방 디자인은 스피커와 조명 등 사용자의 필요에 따라 기능과 공간의 변형과 유동이 가능한 오감을 만족시킨다는 특성을 내세우며 21세기의 미래지향적 주방 가구 디자인을 보여주고 있다.

.jpg) | Z 아일랜드는 지에이치 스튜디오(ZH’s Studio)에서 ‘유동성’이라는 컨셉트를 강조하여 진행하고 있는 형태 연구 작업과 관련이 깊다.
과거 ‘아이스’시리즈(Ice-Series) 작업은 자연 환경을 둘러보고 녹아 내리는 얼음, 흐르는 빙하와 빙퇴석 등을 관찰한 후, 이를 출발점으로 삼았다. Z 아일랜드 역시 아이스 시리즈의 변주로 볼 수 있는 요소다. 선박 디자인에 쓰이는 3D 소프트웨어 애플리케이션을 이용한 덕택에 디자인 팀에서는 복잡한 겉모습(NURBS_Surfaces)을 상세히 탐색할 수 있었으며 주거 환경에 맞게끔 생산적으로 재창조해낼 수 있었다.
이러한 디자인 방식의 선택으로 이러한 부분의 형태는 동일한 내용으로 계속 누릴 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 독립 배치된 주방 가구를 인간 공학적으로 디자인 하자는 요구도 자연스럽게 만족시킬 수 있었다.
Z 아일랜드는 요리용 아일랜드, 보조 아일랜드, 배경 벽의 3 요소로 구성되어 있다. 요리용 아일랜드는 한쪽 방향으로 길게 놓인 모양으로(450cm X 70cm), 조리대와 식탁이 가로로 놓여 있고 그 한 쪽 끝으로 가면 세로 벽에는 디지털 스크린이 보인다. 요리용 아일랜드가 기다란 형태인 반면 보조 아일랜드는 동그란 점이 하나 똑 떨어져 있는 것과 같이 재미있다. 설거지를 할 수 있는 싱크대와 수납 공간이다.
Z 아일랜드를 감싸고 있는 벽체는 물결처럼 굽이치는 모양이 신비롭다. 듀폰사가 자랑하는 열성형 주방 소재 코리안으로 제작된 가로 세로 각 60cm의 크기의 모듈이 다양한 방식으로 차곡차곡 쌓여서 만들어졌다. 여러 패턴이 서로 맞물린 특이한 모양이다. |

.jpg) | 요리용 아일랜드와 보조 아일랜드는 독립적으로 배치된다. 이들은 각기 넓은 주방 공간에서 중심부 역할을 하게끔 디자인되었다. 요리용 아일랜드는 각종 조리용 기능을 모두 갖추고 있어서 편리하게 사용할 수 있다. 탑재된 각종 전자 기기들을 보면 Z 아일랜드가 얼마나 미래지향적인 21세기형 주방인지 알 수 있다. 식탁 부분에 있는 2,000개에 달하는 발광 소자는 조리 시간이나 식탁의 좌석 배치에 맞게끔 얼마든지 조절된다.
사용자의 취향대로 실내에 아름다운 향을 가득 채워주는 아로마 장치도 3개나 달려 있다. 여기에 특히 놀라운 것은 특별히 고안된 가열막이 코리안 소재 내부에 숨겨져 있어서 조리된 음식의 온도를 오랫동안 유지할 수 있다는 점이다. 조리 용도의 전기 버너는 조리대나 식탁과 같은 높이라서 아일랜드 전체가 평평하다.
사용자는 편리하게 제작된 작동 패널로 아일랜드의 전 기능을 마음껏 활용할 수 있다. 요리용 아일랜드의 수직면에는 평면 LCD 스크린이 달려 있어서 인터넷 접속은 물론 아침 식사와 뉴스 시청을 동시에 즐길 수 있다. 노래도 얼마든지 들을 수 있다. LCD 스크린 밑에는 미니 맥이 살짝 숨겨져 있다.
요리용 아일랜드의 세로 확장부는 벽체이면서도 생동감 있는 조명과 오디오 시설을 갖추고 있다. 특별한 날, 특별한 시간에 어울리게 조명과 음악을 자유자재로 바꿀 수 있으니 분위기를 내는 데는 그만이다.
경우에 따라서는 단순히 장식적인 기능을 담당하는 스피커와 조명 시스템 이상의 역할을 해내기도 한다. 선반을 열 때 필요할 수도 있고 수납 공간을 가릴 수도 있다. 이렇듯 사용자의 필요에 따라 얼마든지 변환이 가능하여 다양한 방법으로 인간의 오감을 만족시켜 줄 것이다. |

.jpg) | | 아일랜드 전체는 백색 코리안(Corian Glacier White)으로 입혀졌다. 백색 코리안은 열성형이 가능한 데다 내구성과 투명성이 뛰어나서, Z 아일랜드의 소재로는 맞춤이었다. 까다로운 형태의 기하학적 표면은 진공 성형술을 써서 만들었다. 오차도 거의 없이 훌륭히 조립해 낼 수 있었다. 백색 코리안은 매우 단단하기 때문에 청결은 물론 고기능을 요구하는 주방 가구의 내구성을 한 차원 높게 구현해 준다. |

.jpg) | The Z.Island is in line with a series of formal studies that have been performed in ZH’s Studio emphasizing the conceptual term of “fluidity”.
Previously the “ Ice-Series” had its formal trigger in the observation of natural phenomena such as the melting of ice or the flow of glaciers and their moraines.
The Z.Islands can be perceived as variations of that theme.
Due to the application of advanced 3D software from the field of ship design the office is enabled to explore complex surfaces (NURBS_Surfaces) and their productivity for domestic environments.
A major benefit of this design language is that it will not only appear continous but it also blends in seamlessly into the ergonomic needs of a kitchen island.
The overall composition contains the main cooking island, the secondary island as well as a background of wall panels. The main Island is an elongated cantilevering shape (450cm * 70cm), which evolves from a horizontal cooking and eating surface continuously into a vertical digital surface. In contrast to this stretched figure the secondary Island resembles a point/drop. It contains the sink the dishwasher as well as a shelving unit.
The background is an elevation of a wavy morphological puzzle consisting of modular 60cm * 60cm thermoformed corian elements that are rotated and reassembled in various ways creating complex patterns on the interior walls. |

 | Both Islands are free standing. They are conceived as centre points within a larger loft like environment.
On the main island’s top surface all cooking functions are inscribed plus a series of electronic features creating a futuristic outlook on what a kitchen might be in the 21st century. The table integrates nearly 2000 LEDs which are programmable by the user showing e.g. the cooking timer or the seating order. 3 aromatic scent dispensers are responsive to the users wishes to create certain scents in the flat.
|An especially developed heating membrane is invisibly integrated in the corian surface and allows for keeping the food warm over an extended period of time. The food is prepared on an induction cooking hob that is flush with the neighbouring surface. Via a main user friendly touch control panel all functions will be steered from a central point. In the main island’s vertical surface we integrated a flat LCD screen enabling the user to surf the internet or to watch the news in the morning while having breakfast. A mini mac is integrated underneath the LCD screen in order to allow for listening to I tunes etc.
As an extension of the Island serves a wall panelling system which integrate animated light sources as well as acoustic devices that will fill the atmosphere with changing light and sound according to the specific occasion.
In certain areas these panels become more than a decorative speaker and light system. They serve as shelving unit doors and hide additional storing areas.
The overall environment is responsive to the users needs and might be adjusted addressing all senses in various ways. |

 | All cladding is manufactured from Corian Glacier White. Thermoformable properties as well
as translucency and endurance are key factors for choosing this solid surface material. The vacuum forming techniques allow for manufacturing geometrically demanding surfaces and also build them with very low tolerances. The material’s solid nature strengthens its endurance in a highly functional and hygienique context. |
